We love our allies!
Allies are incredibly important to any cause. We are often asked, “How can I be an ally?” So we compiled a few ways you can be an ally to our cause…
Understand the Basics: Learn about the LGBTQIA+ community and understand key terms, such as sexual orientation, gender identity, cisgender, transgender, non-binary, etc. Awareness and understanding are the first steps towards support.
Listen and Learn: Listen to the experiences of people in the LGBTQIA+ community. Attend their events, read their stories, watch their films. Be open to learning, even if some information might challenge your initial beliefs or perceptions.
Use Correct Pronouns: Always use the correct names and pronouns that individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community prefer. If you’re unsure, politely ask. Showing respect for someone’s identity is a basic act of kindness.
Stand Against Discrimination: Confront discrimination and homophobia when you encounter it. This can range from not laughing at a homophobic joke to actively standing up for someone who is being harassed.
Support Equality: Advocate for equal rights for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This could involve supporting legislation or policies that protect these rights, or it could involve raising awareness in your community.
Don’t Make Assumptions: Don’t assume you know someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity based on how they look or act. Also, don’t assume that all LGBTQIA+ individuals have the same experiences or perspectives.
Encourage Open Dialogue: Encourage a respectful dialogue where people can share and learn information about the LGBTQIA+ community if they have questions or misconceptions.
Value Privacy: If someone has shared their identity or experiences with you, do not share this information with others unless they have given you permission. Coming out is a personal decision and it’s up to each person to decide when and with whom they want to share this information.
Offer Support: If you know someone who is coming out or grappling with their identity, offer your support. Let them know that they are not alone, and that you’re there for them.
Celebrate Diversity: Recognize and celebrate the diversity and individuality of the LGBTQIA+ community. Support events like Pride, and promote positive, diverse representations of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
